A recent Swedish study has looked at the risk of dental implant complications and problems as Sweden is one of the countries with the highest number of implants per capita. The study is particularly interesting as it looks at the biological complications that can arise as a result of dental implant treatment.
These dental implant complications include peri-implantitis where the tissues around the implant post can become inflamed, resulting in the loss of the jaw bone supporting the implant. Initially the study looked at the results of a questionnaire and found a high degree of satisfaction amongst those who had opted for dental implants, particularly amongst those who were older and amongst men.
In spite of this, a total of nearly 600 patients at 37 clinics in Sweden were examined at a nine-year follow-up and it was found that 7.6% of patients had lost at least one implant and 14.5% had developed peri-implantitis. Patients who had periodontal disease were at an increased risk of developing severe peri-implantitis, and both gum disease and smokers were associated with implant loss.
The study found that peri-implantitis seemed to develop within the first few years after a dental implant procedure before progressing quite quickly. While this study might seem to be alarming for anyone who is considering dental implants, it’s worth remembering that dental implants do have a very high success rate and that you don’t have to develop peri-implantitis.
Here at the Manhattan Periodontics & Implant Surgery we take every precaution to minimize risks of dental implant complications and problems during implant procedures and anyone having this treatment is provided with all the information needed to maintain healthy dental implants for many years afterwards. Before we even begin any dental implant treatment, we assess every person very carefully for their suitability for this procedure.
The study mentioned existing periodontal disease and smoking as being risk factors and our periodontist Dr. Navid Rahmani will help you with any existing gum disease treatment. Also highly recommends quitting smoking before treatment begins. Every implant procedure is very thoroughly planned to ensure each implant is inserted in precisely the right position to give excellent aesthetic and functional results.
After surgery is completed, we will make sure you are provided with all the information you need to care for the surgery site while your implant heals and integrates with your jawbone. Once the implant has been restored with your new tooth then it’s important that you are committed to maintaining a healthy mouth to avoid any dental implant complications and problems. Without proper oral care the chances of developing peri-implantitis or other dental implants complications are greatly increased. It’s vital to brush at least twice daily and you must floss thoroughly around each implant. This isn’t particularly tricky to do and we can show you precisely how to carry out this essential yet quick daily task.
It’s also important that you come back to see us for regular checkups and professional cleanings so we can make sure the implants are thoroughly cleaned and we can check their condition. Peri-implantitis is serious condition so we do recommend contacting us if you feel there is something wrong with your implant or if you begin to notice the gum tissue around the implant looks inflamed or becomes painful. Sometimes with prompt treatment it is possible to save the implant.
