Dr. Navid Rahmani, NYC periodontist at Manhattan Periodontics & Implant Center in Midtown Manhattan is a passionate advocate of good gum health as he is well aware of the consequences this disease can have for dental and general health. There have been numerous studies linking periodontal disease or advanced gum disease to serious health conditions which is why he feels it is so important that everyone knows how to look after their gums.
The latest study to be published shows a link between patients with chronic kidney disease and inflammatory conditions such as periodontal disease. Chronic kidney disease affects around 10% of the adult population and those with this condition can often have a higher risk of cardiovascular disease compared to the rest of the population who do not have this disease. Kidney disease will cause kidney function to progressively worsen and it can raise blood pressure and may lead to chest pains and progressive heart disease.
Worryingly, this latest research suggests a higher rate of mortality in people with chronic kidney disease may be linked to periodontal disease, a destructive and inflammatory condition that destroys gum tissue and bone, ultimately leading to tooth loss. In the past it has been found that in excess of 85% of people with chronic kidney disease also have gum problems which are caused by inadequate oral hygiene and made worse by an impaired immune system and delayed wound healing.
It is already known that mouth bacteria can enter the bloodstream through open wounds in the gums which are caused by periodontal disease. Once in the bloodstream these bacteria can affect the blood cells, increasing the risk of clotting and the arteries becoming narrower. Now there is a study being conducted into the effects of treating periodontal disease in chronic kidney patients in the hope that this will show mortality rates can be lowered.
It is impossible to overstress the need for good gum health. If you do have gum problems, your general dentist may choose to refer you to a NYC periodontist but there is no reason why you cannot book your own appointment as you do not need a referral. Specialized treatment can often be the best way to approach a problem as serious as advanced gum disease and Dr. Rahmani has invested heavily in the very latest technology for patient comfort and well-being. In addition, NYC periodontist Dr. Rahmani has attended many advanced course to learn the most up-to-date techniques and it makes good sense to choose the most highly qualified and experienced periodontist you can.
Professional gum care is vitally important but will be worthless unless you back up the results with good gum care at home. Good oral hygiene is easy to maintain and doesn’t take very long each day. If you are ever in doubt about the best way to brush and floss then it is best to ask your hygienist or NYC periodontist for advice. You’ll find all good dentists are delighted to teach their patients how to look after teeth and gums at home so please don’t hesitate to ask.
