Do you wear a lower dentures? If you do and have had it for several years, then you might have noticed it has become increasingly ill-fitting and loose during this time. While you could have it relined or remade to improve the fit and retention, lower dentures are likely to cause problems for wearers. This is because they rely heavily on retention to help them remain stable.
Initially, this retention is provided by the bony ridge that used to support teeth. As soon as natural teeth are extracted then this ridge can soon begin to diminish, becoming flatter and narrower and less able to provide any substantial support. As a result lower dentures can become increasingly difficult to wear and may begin to move around or rub. Some people resort to using dentures adhesive but this is only really a temporary solution and can be quite expensive in the longer term, not to mention messy. This is why dental implants are becoming an increasingly popular solution.
Implant dentists can insert as few as two or four dental implants to secure a lower dentures. This means treatment is surprisingly affordable and practical. The implants are inserted towards the front of the mouth where the bone mass tends to be greater, so there’s less chance of requiring a bone graft. The dental implants are fitted with special attachments or a bar and the lower dentures is fitted with the corresponding attachments so it can simply be clipped into place. The dentures can easily be removed for cleaning. Afterwards you’ll find the dentures is held firmly in position and there’ll be no need to worry about it moving or rubbing on your gums as it’s supported by the dental implants. This is a great treatment for improving self-confidence and has already helped many, many dentures wearers.
If you’d prefer to get rid of your dentures completely then you might want to think about having an implant supported bridge. This treatment is likely to require more implants, but your dentures can be completely replaced with a fixed bridge that is either screwed or cemented into place and which can only be removed by your dentist. It’s an excellent treatment for restoring teeth.
If you wear an upper dentures then you’re less likely to have any problems with retention due to the way it covers up the upper palate, using this to hold it in position. However there is no reason why dental implants can’t be used to secure upper dentures and it does mean your new dentures can be constructed so it no longer covers up the upper palate. Instead it will be constructed in a horseshoe shape much like a lower dentures so it is far less bulky and a lot more comfortable to wear. You can even choose to get rid of your dentures completely and to have an implant supported bridge for your upper jaw.
