What Is the Extent of Your Gum Disease?

It can be worrying if you are told you need treatment for gum disease, as this is a condition that needs to be taken seriously. The type of treatment will depend largely on the extent of your gum disease, and not surprisingly it is much easier to treat this condition when it is caught early on.

The next stage of treatment for gum disease is also pretty straightforward and deep cleans your gums. This procedure is used when the gums have pulled away from the teeth, creating pockets with a depth of several millimeters.

When this happens the gum pockets quickly become very difficult to keep clean and are soon filled with infection causing bacteria. Deep cleaning these pockets removes the bacteria so your gums have a good chance of healing, and hopefully as they do so will begin to fit more tightly around the teeth. This treatment is called scaling and planing, and can be on-going as part of a treatment plan to help keep your gums healthy.

Periodontal Disease or Advanced Gum Disease

The above treatments are most commonly used to eradicate or control gum disease, but there are a number of other procedures that can help treat badly infected gums, and where there has been extensive damage to the gum tissues or even to the supporting bone and ligaments around the teeth. These treatments cut away diseased tissue, and if necessary these tissues can be replaced in various different ways. Bone that has been destroyed can be replaced with bone grafts, or with artificial materials that help provide a matrix which encourages new bone cells to grow. Lost gum tissue can be replaced with gum tissue grafted from another site in your mouth, or with another type of artificial material that encourages the growth of new gum tissue cells.
