If you currently wear a full denture and are looking into using dental implants to secure it, then you may have come across a dental implants technique called All-on-Four. So what is this procedure and would it be suitable for you?
All-on-Four is a tried and tested dental implants technique that has been used since the 1990s so it has been extensively researched. You may also hear this technique being called “Teeth in a Day” or “Same Day Smiles” as you will have the dental implants plus a new arch of teeth that will be secured to these dental implants all on the same day. It is easy to see how this might be appealing as often people will worry they might be left without teeth for several months until their new implants heal.
However one thing to remember is that this new set of teeth will still be temporary and is used while the implants heal, being replaced with a permanent set of teeth several months later once healing is complete. With any dental implant treatment, your dentist should make sure you have some sort of temporary restoration to wear during the healing process and this might mean adapting your current denture or using a new appliance to tide you over.
As you might have guessed from the name, this treatment only requires four dental implants to secure a complete arch of teeth. This can be far fewer than is required to secure a fixed bridge of teeth using conventional dental implants technique. The implants used in this treatment are inserted towards the front of the mouth. This helps to make use of the jawbone in an area where it is thicker and stronger, usually eliminating the need for bone grafts.
The reason why it is possible to use just four dental implants lies in the way the implants are positioned. You will have two inserted right at the front of your mouth, while the other two will be inserted either side. The two right at the front are inserted vertically, but the two either side are angled backwards. This is so longer implant posts can be used, creating a greater surface area that will be in contact with the bone. By doing this the implants ability to integrate and bond with your jawbone will be increased, as will the strength and stability of the implants so they are more able to support a larger number of teeth. So is it the best choice for anyone in this position?
It can be a great technique and this treatment is very popular, but to find out if it is the best option for you, you will need to visit an experienced dental implant dentist such as Dr. Navid Rahmani at Manhattan Periodontics & Implant Surgery.
